5 Characteristics of a Successful Entrepreneur (that Wantrepreneurs Don’t Have)

Here’s a reality check: Not everyone has what it takes to become an entrepreneur.

A lot of people dream of becoming one. Sure. But a good majority of them don’t even take the first step towards their path to success.

Everything remains just that — a dream.

On the other hand, there are a few brave souls who are willing to bet it all just to pursue their dreams and be in control of their destiny. These are the very people who spend countless hours burning the midnight candle at work, persevering, learning, struggling — all for the sake of achieving a better life and making an impact.

That’s a glimpse of what entrepreneurs are made of.

1. Grit. Loads of it.

The journey of an entrepreneur towards insurmountable success is by no means an easy one.

There are going to be rejections, “failures,” hurts, pains, disappointments, etc.

And if you don’t have enough grit, you are bound to give up midway. Or, perhaps, even before your journey has started.

If you want to become a successful entrepreneur, you need to have the grit to fight the challenges or whatever roadblocks you come across.

Some wantrepreneurs do take action. However, because they lack grit, they immediately quit at the first sight of challenges and hurts.

Not only can they help you get clarity on how you ought to be prioritizing your tasks, but they can even help you with major paradigm shifts which are always powerful.

These coaches can also introduce you to people who could become instrumental to your success as an entrepreneur.

Wantrepreneurs would have the wrong mindset towards coaching. For them, coaching is for those who don’t know what they’re doing.

It is for the weak and inferior, therefore, it isn’t for them.

Because of their flawed perception of coaching, they won’t bother with collaborating with a coach, therefore, they miss out on the myriads of benefits that a coach can bring.

3. Action taker

People don’t take action for a lot of reasons. It could be a lack of motivation, know-how, or it could be fear. (The latter is often the case.)

Whatever their reasons might be, if they don’t take action, they don’t get things done. Period.

Most wantrepreneurs dream about living the life of an entrepreneur because they often see the entrepreneurs harvesting the fruits of their labor.

When they start digging to figure out the “labors” the entrepreneurs did to achieve their level of success, they end up backing out from taking action.

When thinking about this, what Steve Jobs said often crosses my mind.

You need to believe that you can change the world — or your world, at the very least — and take action.

Simply believing and dreaming won’t get you anywhere.

If a barrel has a big hole at its bottom, no matter how many times you pour water into it, it’ll never be full.

The same can be said to anyone who runs a business.

Whether you’re a solopreneur, a startup, or an established corporation, you’ll never be able to “fill” or establish your resources if you aren’t proficient in managing it.

There are classic cash handling mistakes that most people make. And because they aren’t even aware of it, they go into entrepreneurship while still carrying the issue.

This, in turn, would lead them to mismanage their resources, ultimately leading to their business closing down.

5. Ability to sell.

Whether you believe it or not, you are selling every.single.day.

Whether you’re looking to influence someone to invest in your startup or you’re creating a marketing funnel to convert your web visitors into paying customers — you are still selling.

In its basic form, to sell is to influence.

You’re influencing your customers to buy your product.

You’re influencing your team to close more deals. (You’re selling an idea that they should work harder.)

If you are to become a successful entrepreneur, you need to have the ability to sell, otherwise, you’ll never get the people around you to advocate what you’re doing.

Whether it be your investors, customers, or stakeholders, you need to bring them on board your business — and you need to have the ability to sell to pull that off.

A wantrepreneur, on the other hand, would only view selling as a means of selling a service or merchandise. This narrow understanding of the true meaning of sales will keep them becoming truly successful since they are undervaluing the power of sales.
